This past Friday, originally slated to play Warsaw in a conference game, the Bulldogs were on the lookout for a game as the Wildcats had to cancel due to Covid and quarantine issues. On Monday of the week, the administration was able to fill in the void with the Lexington Minutemen, a school near the Kansas City area.
Hea Football Coach Kelley Beckner stated, “Anytime you have a cancellation, especially against a conference opponent, it is disheartening. However, our admin team did a tremendous job of immediately searching and finding a quality opponent in Lexington. It was a tough battle in which there were many new faces on the field as injuries and other items held out some of our regular players.”
Coming into the contest, Lexington had only allowed an average of 5 points a game to opponents, the Bulldogs put 20 up and still had points left on the field,
“We knew coming in they were going to be a solid team with great athletes. They showed that tonight, but I still feel like we haven’t played our best football yet. There were times early in the game, I felt we had them on their heels and searching, as we were able to take them out of the game plan to begin with.”
Big plays hampered the Bulldog defense, “We play a type of defense that heavily relies on assignment football, everyone doing their job and relying on each other to trust they will do theirs. A couple times tonight, we had kids trying to do too much which caused us to be out of position and Lexington capitalized. You have to give their kids credit, they made some great plays and plays that we were in good position at times, just didn’t fall our way.”
This week is homecoming week for the Bulldogs as the Sherwood Marksmen come to town. It will also be a pink out theme to honor those fallen as well as those still fighting battles with breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and come loud and ready to cheer on your hometown team. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Friday night.
