Since the inception of the Cedar County Bowl there had not yet been a class win all years they were in school. On Aug. 28, 2020, that all changed. With a 44-28 victory at Bulldog Stadium, the 2021 senior class made history, sweeping their arch county rival Stockton all four years they have been in school.
It was a tremendous night and great achievement for the program. Senior Trey Gaves said, “I felt a huge honor being able to achieve a 4-0 record against Stockton through my high school career. Not ever been done before, it was something special we all worked hard for and it was awesome we were able to make it happen.”
Heading into the contest, Stockton had a slight edge against the hometown Bulldogs, having competed in a jamboree the week before while ElDo remained idle. Coach Kelley Beckner said, “You know going in, not having those live reps against someone other than your team, there is going to be some adjusting when game time rolls around. I thought we adjusted well but you could for sure see some rust being knocked off and some timing issues.”
Senior Gaven Morgan said, “It felt weird not having a jamboree to go off of, but at the end of the day, when the lights come on, it’s time to bail out.”
Offensively, the Bulldogs were effective running and throwing the ball around the field. Gaven Morgan reached the century mark in both receiving and rushing, while three other running backs contributed to the offensive production.
Junior Chance Esparza said this, “I felt good to be out there with my other teammates and playing together as one unit, if the big boys up front do their work, it makes my job a lot easier.” Esparza ran 12 times for 87 yards.
Quarterback Clayton Collins added, “It was a really good team effort, I felt like we got a lot of guys to contribute and that was good to see, Coach Beck has really pushed us during practice to create depth and competition.”
Defensively, the Bulldogs forced turnovers and created some big plays of their own. Coach Beckner said, “I was happy with both sides of the ball tonight, I thought we played hard and rotated a lot of players out there. Anytime you have new faces on the field there will be some adjusting due to the speed of the game. I thought they responded well.”
Next up for the Bulldogs, the Clever Bluejays come to town… Hope to see you Friday!
