Several men and women pickleball players from El Dorado Springs and the surrounding area played in a scramble tournament in Nevada this past Saturday, Dec. 11. The scramble style of the tournament allowed each of the 36 participants to play twelve games with twelve different partners. Points scored each game were added to determine the final standings.

Terry McKinney from Schell City finished first and Mitch Bush from El Dorado Springs finished second overall. Other participants from around El Dorado Springs included Phil Palmer, Tonya Bush, Sheryl Yoder, Ben Chilton and Jeff Hubbard.

Incorporating elements of tennis and ping pong, pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States. Although the game is played by all ages (even some high schools have adopted picleball as a varsity sport) it is particularly attractive to older adults. Physical benefits include increased range of motion, cardiovascular health, enhanced balance and hand/eye coordination. Many adults use the activity as an opportunity for social involvement. And while the games can be quite competitive, sportsmanship and enjoyment are top priorities. At the end of each game players meet at the net, touch paddles and congratulate each other.

Pickleball is usually played in the El Dorado Springs Community Center on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. For those who cannot play during the day, several folks play on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. All are welcome.
