On Saturday, Sept. 9, Cedar County 4-H Shooting Sports entered a award in the annual Fall Classis trap shoot at the Missouri Trap Shooters Association trap range in Linn Creek. The trap shoot was sponsored by Missouri Youth Sport Shooting Alliance (MYSSA). Squad members were Cheston Stacy from Stockton Seekers 4-H Club, George and Rebecca Siegismund from Osage River 4-H Club and Austin Rieder and Nathen Adams from New Kids on the Block 4-H Club. George Siegismund was Cedar County’s high shooter breaking 95 of 100 targets.

By participating in this event, not only did Cedar County youth get to experience the fun of competing against 130 other squads from throughout the state, MYSSA will contribute money to Cedar County 4-H’s Shooting Sports endowment fund. This fund was established and is maintained by Midway USA, the largest shooting sports mail order business in Columbia. The fund was initiated by a grant from Midway and added to by participating in events like the Fall Classic and various fundraising efforts on the part of Cedar County 4-H Shooting Sports. Larry Potterfield, owner of Midway USA, guarantees the fund will earn at least five percent of the principal, basically the interest for that year.

Other shooting sports disciplines offered by Cedar County 4-H are archery, .22 rifle, air rifle, air pistol, all ages 8-18 and .22 pistol, ages 14-18. Ages for shotgun are 11-18. Once members complete a 10 hour course in instruction they are eligible to compete, if they desire, at the Land O’ Lakes youth Fair, regional competition at the Polk County Fairgrounds and the Andy Dalton Shooting Range in Bois D’ Arc and State competitions in Linn Creek and Columbia, all in Missouri. If you are a top shooter, you can try out for the State Team which goes to the annual National 4-H Shoot, currently in Omaha, NE. To participate in shooting sports, you must belong to a county 4-H club. Enrollment for the new 4-H year starts on Oct. 1, so this is the time to get started. Contact your closest 4-H Club or all the University of Missouri Extension Office at 276-3313 for more information. The Extension Office is located in the basement of the County Courthouse in Stockton.
