Society members met at the museum in Stockton on Feb. 28, for a business meeting.
Bob Phillips gave a report on the newest Brooks Blevins book, “A History of the Ozarks – Volume 3,” which contains further mention of Kate Austin, quotes from Leland Fox and also mentions Hammons Products. Bob recommends this trilogy to anyone interested in Ozarks history.
Concrete has been poured and walls are up at the Veterans Memorial Park at the Visitors Center near the Stockton dam.
Kelly C. Sartorious, Ph. D., Director of Advancement, Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area will be presenting a program about pioneer women during the Civil War along with the Mo-Kan line on Monday, May 23 at 1 p.m. in the museum.
Glenda Pate is retiring from writing the Society newsletter.Members appreciated all of her hard work for the years that she wrote. Anna Hopkins will now be writing the newsletter. The quarterly newsletter is available to members of the society.
The 1950 Census will be coming out April 1. Information will be online soon.
The Lindley Prairie Cemetery Board will be printing an updated copy of their cemetery book. It may be available by Memorial Day.
More shelving will be placed in the small, “Second Chance Niche,” re-sale store at the museum to add more sales space.
Lifelong society member, Pat Sanchez, passed away in Oxnard, California recently. Pat was a member of the Huff family in Cedar County, but lived most of her life in California.
The museum will begin summer hours in May and will be open May 7 and May 21, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on those days. The May business meeting will follow the program that begins at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 23 and the museum will be open that day.
Donations this month: Bob O’Dell, two books that belonged to his mother, Viola O’Dell; Historical Sketches of Cedar County and Cedar County Missouri History and Families. Bob Phillips, a class group photo from Bear Creek school.
Reminder: The Cedar County Historical Society will only be able to provide minimal research or look-ups for patrons. They will no longer be able to fulfill requests for genealogy due to the lack of available staff. However, the museum research library is still open for those wishing to complete their own research. Society members can suggest other resources, libraries and internet sites. Society publications, that contain a multitude of information are always available for purchase.
The next meeting will be March 28, in the Stockton museum, 106 West Davis Street. Until May, the museum is open winter hours only, which means, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., during the monthly meetings.
