Abigail Reasner, 13 year old El Dorado Springs Christian School Buffalo, and Angelina Waldmer, 11-year-old El Dorado Springs public school Bulldog, advanced from the local Lions Club Peace Poster competition which was a bold and talented step toward becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning the local competition sponsored by the El Dorado Springs Lions Club.

Abigail’s and Angelina’s posters were among more than 400,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 29th annual Lions international peace poster contest. Lions Club international sponsored the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

The advancing posters were selected from over 100 local entries by a judging panel of 12 impartial judges. Each entry was scored on originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest theme “Celebrate Peace”. The judging was held at the El Dorado Springs Lions Club house on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

El Dorado Springs Lions Club President Sharon Grant said she was impressed with the expression and creativity of the students in El Dorado Springs. “It is evident that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”

The winning posters advanced to face stiff competition at the district level. Abigail Reasoner’s poster advanced on to multi district level competition And there received an additional financial congratulations gift.

Each year one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners are selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000 plus a trip for the winner and two family members to an award ceremony. The merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500.

Locally from the Christian School, Abigail Reasoner placed first. Joelle Byron placed second and Charity Middleton placed third, while Isabel Bryson received honorable mention. The staff that were involved in helping students with the project were Jennifer Caldwell, Cheryl Eslinger, and art/music instructor Bethany Brazier.

Locally from the public school, Angelina Waldmer placed first, Alexandria Bishop placed second and Lydia Burch placed third. The staff involved in helping Students with the project include fifth grade classroom teachers and Khloe Murrell, elementary art instructor, and Brett Stump, high school/middle school art instructor.

Lion District Governor Lewis Carnes served as advisor to the project and Lion Ron Alumbaugh was project chairman and presenter.

Students who placed in the contest attended an appreciation banquet at the Lions Clubhouse and regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Each special recognition student received a meal, in addition, a financial congratulations token from the club, a gift certificate from Healey PC El Dorado Springs by Travis Yeargan, a gift card from the El Dorado Springs Sonic Drive-in and a Lions Club certificate of recognition.
