The Twentieth Century members had our first meeting on Aug. 12, with our hostess Kay Sewell and co-hostess Sandi Eaves, Georgia Detwiler, Janet Conner, Dorothy Foster, Glenda Ware and Sue Jones. The members enjoyed a delicious brunch and visiting. Evelyn passed out our programs for the new year.

Our Sept. 9 meeting was held in the home of our hostess Sheryl Henry with Jean Wernel serving as co-hostess. The minutes were read and approved. The treasurer report was given. The club will make a donation to a scholarship fund in memory of our deceased member Luella Phipps. There was no old business. New business was that the club is considering new members. Georgia will write a memorial for Luella to be given at our next meeting. The opinion was given by Dorothy Foster on the types and the times of phone calls received, which can be a scam and a nuisance.

The program was presented by Evelyn Boyle. She chose the 1970s which was the biggest period of change in musical theater and rock music. Award winning movies during this time included Patton, The Godfather, Godfather 2, and Rocky. Some popular movies were Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, and Love Story. Several of the most popular songs were Let It Be Me and Bridge Over Trouble Waters by the Beatles, I’ll Be There by the Jackson Five, Everything is Beautiful by Ray Stevens, and Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head by B.J. Thomas. There were 4 T.V. Stations ADB, CBS, NBC, and PBS. Favorite T.V. Clothes in the 70’s included bell bottom pants, mini skirts, and platform shoes. It was the decade of polyester material.

In 1972 Motorola demonstrated the cellular phone. The 1972 Olympics was in Germany. Hank Aaron tied Babe Ruth’s record of  714  home runs. The designated  hitter rule was adopted in baseball. Due to financial hardship more than half of women worked outside the home. The U.S. had the Watergate scandal for two years. The first woman entered the Air Force Academy in 1976. These were only a few of the happenings in the 1070’s which brought back memories to each of us.
