Newton Orie Gish, 74, Sheldon, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at his home in Sheldon. Newt was born June 24, 1948, in Des Moines, IA, to James S. and Maxine E. (Schermerhorn) Gish. He married Linda Rae Garber on Aug. 7, 1971, in Des Moines, IA, and she survives of the home.

Newt was raised in Iowa. At the age of 19 he began serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After his service years, he returned to Iowa. For a time, he worked as a certified auto mechanic, then became a self-taught welder and worked for Ryko Manufacturing for 27 years building commercial car washes.  Newt and his wife, Linda, were also foster parents for 20 years in Missouri and in Iowa. Following his retirement in 1993, he and Linda came to Cedar County where he bought a farm in Cedar Springs. They later moved to Sheldon in 2015 where they have continued to reside.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Maxine; and a sister, Connie Sue Gish.

In addition to his wife Linda; six children, James Gish (Shelly) – El Dorado Springs, Joseph Gish (Shannon), Boone, IA, Jeremy Gish, El Dorado Springs, David Blackford, Des Moines, IA, Bret Gish, Sheldon, and John Gish, Nevada; as well as many foster children; ten grandchildren, Hilda Horner (Tommy), Cassie Gish “Brittany,” Calvin Gish (Kiley), Katie Fenton (Josh), Jacob Gish, Melinda Losinger (Levi), Mariah Luckett (Gavin), Halen Gish, Lilleth Gish (Willow) and Kennedy Gish; seven great-grandchildren, Carrigan, Tylan, Hunter, BrynLeigh, Atlas, Bentley and Raelynn; and one great-great-grandchild, Cylan; siblings, Kenny Gish, Sue Sziber, Lola Gish – all of Des Moines, IA, Tom Gish (Gail), Knoxville, IA, Marilyn Diaz (Alex), John Gish, Billy Gish – all of Des Moines, IA, Joann Williams (Larry), Ankeny, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials services with Military Funeral Honors were held Saturday, June 3, at Whitehall Cemetery near Virgil City with Pastor Wayne Coble officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.
