Ruby Maddalin Sherman, 96, Wellsville, KS, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021. Ruby was born Nov. 16, 1924, in Harwood, to the late Charley and Bertha (Hawkins) Hargrove. She graduated from high school at El Dorado Springs High School in 1944.

On Nov. 24, 1942, she was united in marriage to John Edgar Sherman and to this union three daughters and on son were born: Toni Kay, Thelma Rae, Rita Mae and Jack Evan. Even though she had never been out of Cedar County prior to her marriage, she traveled across the United States living in Missouri, Georgia, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Colorado plus Italy and Germany following John’s 20 year career in military service. They returned to Kansas and Missouri to farm two different farms. After retiring from farming they moved to Nevada and lived there until John’s death in November 2003, after 61 years of marriage. Ruby then moved to Ottawa, KS, to be near her daughter, Rita. In 2016, Ruby moved to the Wellsville Retirement Community and lived there the rest of her life.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; 11 siblings; and one grandson, William John Sherman.

Survivors include her children: Toni (Jerry) Weber – Durand, WI, Thelma Tomie Pettibon – Gower, Rita (Ed) Anderson – Wellsville, KS, and Jack (JoAnne) Sherman – New Llano, LA; 10 grandchildren: Ronda (Russell) Pound, Robert (Kim) Decker, Terry Bentz, Darcy (Jeral) Hahn, Andy (Kim) Bentz, Jared (Miricle) Anderson, Kyle (Shannon) Anderson, Josh (Tara) Sherman, Joseph (Brittany) Sherman and Wesley (Hailey Sherman; 22 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services for Ruby Sherman will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28,  at Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home with burial to follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service.
