The Elizabeth Carey Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors annually two youth contests; the American History Essay Contest for grades 5 – 8 and the Good Citizens Contests for all area schools in Vernon and Cedar counties.  This year’s recognition was held on February 7 at the 1st Christian Church, Nevada.

The American History Essay Contest topic was “The Boston Massacre.”  The only school and grade participating this year was Mrs. Kim Greer’s 8th Grade Social Studies class at the Nevada Middle School.  The winners were: 1st place, Mary Kate Russell; 2nd place, Grady Stewart and 3rd place, Jayden Thankamani.  Mary Kate Russell’s 1st place essay was sent on for further competition in the Missouri State DAR’s state contest.

The Good Citizen Award is recognition for a high school senior from area schools in who show the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.  These students have the opportunity to enter the Missouri State DAR Scholarship contest by writing an essay on “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It” along with their resume’.  Those high school seniors recognized as Good Citizens from their schools were:  Emma Morris, Bronaugh High School; Preston Robison, El Dorado Springs High School; Isabell Bryson, El Dorado Spring Christian School; Ezinne Mba, Nevada High School; and Kylie Alexander, Northeast Vernon Co. High School.  Emma Morris’s essay and scholarship application was selected to be submitted for further competition in the state Missouri State DAR contest.

Jenise Burch served as chairman of the American History Essay Contests and Jean Lovewell served as chairman of the Good Citizens Award Contest.

These contests are open to all schools in Vernon and Cedar counties and to any home schooled students.
