It was cold, brisk and often a wet Monday morning for a golf tournament, let alone a tournament to determine whether your season ends or you move forward to state.
With less than ideal conditions the ElDo Golf team took to the links at Island Green Golf course in Republic Monday May, 10. It was stout competition battle against yourself, other competitors, and the course/conditions. Juniors Auston Smith and Devun Salazar headline the team shoot 94, 93 respectively. Both scoring below the 100 cut line for the state tournament. It will be both golfers first time at the tournament.
Coach Beckner said, “Man, talk about adversity. Course is tough, weather is tough and the competition is just as hard. I am extremely happy for both Auston and Devun making it one more week, I am really excited for our team taking second. We thought we under performed at conference so to come out and do that, just speaks highly for our kids.”
As a team the Bulldog finished second in standing with a score of 418. Mt Vernon won the contest at 378 and Butler finished third at 419. The qualifying team scores were from: Devun Salazar, Auston Smith, Rees McCullough and Blake Johnson.
The state tournament will be held next Monday, May 17, in Bolivar at Silo Ridge Golf Course. Beckner added, “talk about tough courses, they don’t get much tough than Silo. Devun and Auston have their work cut out for ‘em, but hey, that’s the fun part!”
