The Stockton Tigers defeated the El Dorado Springs Bulldogs 34-14 to win the Cedar County Bowl in the 2016 season opener.
Stockton opened up the game with a nine-play scoring drive to jump out to an early 8-0 lead.
The Bulldogs responded by driving into Stockton territory where a botched snap gave the ball back to the Tigers. Stockton drove the ball down to the ElDo 35-yard line where the Bulldogs backed the Tigers into a 4th and 10 situation. The Stockton QB threw up a pass that got behind the ElDo defense as the Tigers led 14-0.
ElDo again drove the ball into Tiger territory before a Tiger defender picked off a pass at their 29-yard line and returned it to the ElDo 26. After a few miscues by the Tigers offense coupled by a stingy ElDo defense, the Bulldogs took over at their own 39-yard line. The Bulldogs put together an eight-play drive that was highlighted by a 38-yard pass from Riley Boyd to Jake Schieffer and capped by a 13-yard touchdown run by Ethan Dubois to make it a 14-6 game.
On the ensuing drive the Tigers were forced to punt giving ElDo the ball deep in their own territory with a little over 3 minutes left in the half. Three plays later, Dayton Austin ran 74-yards to the house with Dubois adding the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14 with 2:05 left on the clock. The Tigers went on a 12-play hurry-up drive to score once more to take a 20 -14 lead.
The second half saw the Tigers put up 14 more points as they took home the 34-14 win.
Coach Derek Scroggins said “I thought our boys played hard tonight and there was a lot of energy on the field and from the sideline. We just made some mistakes that Stockton was able to capitalize on and that ended up being the difference in the game.
We have a lot of young kids playing significant minutes and I think that we have a high ceiling on how good of a team we can become. I expect us to take another step in the right direction in Week 2 and I’m excited to get back to work.”
The Bulldogs gained 330 yards to Stockton’s 300, led by Austin who had 101 yards on 9 rushing attempts. Austin also led the defense in tackles with 14.
ElDo (0-1) next plays host to Pembroke Hill, this Friday at 7 pm.
